About Great Zimbabwe
Great Zimbabwe is the stone city that gave the country its name: walls built without mortar, an enclosure complex on the valley floor and a hill site above it, all raised by Shona builders over centuries. It is the most significant archaeological site in Zimbabwe and one of the most important in Southern Africa.
A visit is about understanding rather than sightseeing. With a good guide the scale of the masonry, the sequence of construction and what the site meant to the people who built it all become legible, which is why we always arrange Great Zimbabwe as a guided visit.
Great Zimbabwe lies in Masvingo Province in south-eastern Zimbabwe, near the town of Masvingo.
